SUMMARY:xBGAS: Toward a RISC-V ISA Extension for Global, Scalable, Shared
 Memory
DESCRIPTION:John Leidel (Tactical Computing Laboratories), Xi Wang and Yon
g Chen (Texas Tech University), David Donofrio and Farzad Fatollahi-Fard (
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), and Kurt Keville (Massachusetts In
stitute of Technology)\n\nGiven the switch from monolithic architectures t
o integrated systems of commodity components, scalable high performance co
mputing architectures often suffer from unwanted latencies when operations
depart an individual device domain. Transferring control and/or data acr
oss loosely coupled commodity devices implies a certain degree of cooperat
ing in the form of complex system software. The end result being a total
system architecture the operates with low degrees of efficiency. \n\nThis
work presents initial research into creating micro architecture extension
s to the RISC-V instruction set that provide tightly coupled support for c
ommon high performance computing operations. This xBGAS micro architectur
e extension provides applications the ability to access globally shared me
mory blocks directly from rudimentary instructions. The end result is a h
ighly efficient micro architecture for scalable shared memory programming
environments.\n\nTag: Memory, NVRAM, Parallel Programming Languages, Libra
