SUMMARY:Doing Moore with Less – Leapfrogging Moore’s Law with Inexactness
 for Supercomputing
DESCRIPTION:Sven Leyffer and Stefan M. Wild (Argonne National Laboratory),
Mike Fagan (Rice University), Marc Snir (University of Illinois), Krishna
Palem (Rice University), and Yoshii Kazutomo and Hal Finkel (Argonne Nati
onal Laboratory)\n\nWe investigate the use of inexactness, to trade soluti
on quality with energy savings to reduce power consumption in HPC systems,
using commercial off-the-shelf processors for lower-precision arithmetic.
We implement an inexact Newton algorithm for solving nonlinear equations
to show how to reinvest energy savings to improve solution quality. We pro
vide an analytical model to explain our findings, and provide a justificat
ion for using nonstandard half-precision arithmetic for ill-conditioned pr
oblems.\n\nTag: Architectures, Heterogeneous Systems, Quantum Computing\n\
nRegistration Category: Workshop Reg Pass\n\nSession Chair: Jeffrey S. Vet
ter (Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL))\n\n
