SUMMARY:Introduction - IA^3 2018: 8th Workshop on Irregular Applications:
  Architectures and Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:Antonino Tumeo, John Feo, and Vito Giovanni Castellana (Pacifi
c Northwest National Laboratory)\n\nDue to the heterogeneous data sets the
y process, data intensive applications employ a diverse set of methods and
data structures, exhibiting irregular memory accesses, control flows, and
communication patterns. Current supercomputing systems are organized arou
nd components optimized for data locality and bulk synchronous computation
 s. Managing any form of irregularity on them demands substantial programmi
ng effort, and often leads to poor performance. Holistic solutions to thes
e challenges emerge only by considering the problem from multiple perspect
ives: from micro- to system-architectures, from compilers to languages, fr
om libraries to runtimes, and from algorithm design to data characteristic
 s. Only strong collaborative efforts among researchers with different expe
rtise, including domain experts and end users, can lead to significant bre
akthroughs. This workshop brings together scientists with different backgr
ounds to discuss methods and technologies for efficiently supporting irreg
ular applications on current and future architectures.\n\nTag: Architectur
