SUMMARY:Quantum Computing for Scientific Applications
DESCRIPTION:Costin Iancu and Wibe de Jong (Lawrence Berkeley National Labo
ratory), Pavel Lougovski (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), Ojas Parekh (San
dia National Laboratories), Jarrod McClean (Google LLC), Nicholas Rubin (R
igetti Computing), Ali Javadi (IBM), and Davide Venturelli (NASA)\n\nQuant
um computing is an emerging technology which promises to revolutionize man
y computational tasks. However, for a non-specialist it may appear that it
is surrounded by a shroud of hype and misconception. The main goal of thi
s tutorial is to de-mystify practical quantum computing and all its vital
algorithmic aspects to a general audience of computer scientists with litt
le to none prior knowledge of the subject. We plan to achieve this through
a combination of lecture materials, demonstrations, and hands on exercise
s delivered by quantum computing experts with extensive experience of publ
ic speaking and teaching from the government research laboratories (DOE, N
ASA), industry (IBM, Google, Rigetti), and academia. In particular, we aim
to elucidate quantum computing use for scientific applications, covering
the following areas: 1) quantum algorithm design; 2) quantum programming t
oolkits; and 3) practical error mitigation for quantum algorithms. We will
focus on the design and implementation of hybrid quantum-classical comput
ational strategies including variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and qua
ntum approximate optimization algorithms in the context of quantum chemist
ry, nuclear structure, and quantum field theory problems. We will discuss
multiple practical ways to mitigate systematic coherent errors in the nasc
ent quantum hardware, including general techniques such as randomized comp
ilation.\n\nTag: Programming Systems, Quantum Computing, Tools\n\nRegistra
