SUMMARY:Early Career Survival Guide for Successful Communication: Preparin
g Effective Grant Proposals, Publications, and Presentations
DESCRIPTION:While technical excellence is a necessary condition for a succ
essful scientific career, it is often not a sufficient condition. Unless w
e know how to convey our technical advances and exciting research ideas to
a broader audience, they will not generate the interest and impact needed
to propel our careers. The second important component of successful resea
rch is the ability to understand audience (e.g. proposal and paper reviewe
rs, readers) and the strength to take constructively critics. This session
will touch upon communication skills for successful grant proposal writin
g, publications, technical presentations, and networking. Panel discussion
s, and hands-on practice with your peers will provide you with the opportu
nity to learn and enhance your communication skills.\n\nCommunication with
the Reader\n\nThis session addresses the question of how to engage with t
he readers of our scientific publications, and more in particular, how to
address peer review critiques of our scientific journal and proceedings pa

-----\nUnderstanding the Reader\n\nThis session discusses how to maximize
the success of your proposal and increase the probability of a positive re
view. Particularly, you will learn about the important role of a Program M
anager (PM) in this process. Dr. Lucy Nowell, a seasoned DOE Program Manag
er, will share her insights on how to d...\n\n\nLucy Nowell (US Department

al relevance of presentation skills, use of ignite talks, and elevator pit
ches. It will include a short hands-on workshop: create your own elevator
pitch / ignite talk on your research topic.\n\n\nBert Debusschere (Sandia
