SUMMARY:Runtime for Exascale and Beyond: Convergence or Divergence?
DESCRIPTION:Marc Snir (University of Illinois), Pavan Balaji (Argonne Nati
onal Laboratory), Laxmikant Kale (University of Illinois), Vivek Sarkar (G
eorgia Institute of Technology), Sean Treichler (Nvidia Corporation), Hart
mut Kaiser (Louisiana State University), and Raymond Namyst (University of
Bordeaux)\n\nWe propose to discuss in the panel the following three asser
tions:\n\na) The coming decade is likely to see an accelerated evolution i
n programming models for HPC, for several reasons:\n\n -- As Moore's law p
lateaus, increased performance requires increasingly heterogeneous platfor
ms and asynchronous algorithms. \n\n -- As platforms become more dynamic (
e.g., due to dynamic power management) and algorithms become more adaptive
, runtime adaptation is increasingly important. Asynchronous Task Models
(ATM), such as Charm++, Legion, PaRSEC, etc., seem better suited to handle
this evolution than the prevalent model of MPI+OpenMP. \n\nb) The potenti
al benefits of new programming models cannot fully realized without a more
powerful runtime that better integrates internode and intranode synchroni
zation and communication with local resource scheduling and memory managem
ent.\n\nc) The development and deployment of new programming models, as we
ll as more efficient support for current models can be accelerated by stan
dardizing new interfaces that enable such integration\n\nRegistration Cate
