SUMMARY:VeloC: Very Low Overhead Checkpointing System
DESCRIPTION:Bogdan Nicolae and Franck Cappello (Argonne National Laborator
 y) and Adam Moody, Elsa Gonsiorowski, and Kathryn Mohror (Lawrence Livermo
re National Laboratory)\n\nCheckpointing large amounts of related data con
currently to stable storage is a common I/O pattern of many HPC applicatio
ns. However, such a pattern frequently leads to I/O bottlenecks that lead
to poor scalability and performance. As modern HPC infrastructures continu
e to evolve, there is a growing gap between compute capacity vs. I/O capab
ilities. Furthermore, the storage hierarchy is becoming increasingly heter
ogeneous: in addition to parallel file systems, it comprises burst buffers
, key-value stores, deep memory hierarchies at node level, etc. In this co
ntext, state of art is insufficient to deal with the diversity of vendor A
PIs, performance and persistency characteristics. This poster proposes Vel
oC, a low-overhead checkpointing system specifically designed to address t
he checkpointing needs of future exascale HPC systems. VeloC offers a simp
le API at user level, while employing an advanced multi-level resilience s
trategy that transparently optimizes the performance and scalability of ch
eckpointing by leveraging heterogeneous storage.\n\nRegistration Category:
